How a Charleston Artist's Paintings Ended Up in the Final Season of Outer Banks

Hey, what's up. This is Demetrius Bing, local artist here in Charleston. @artofbing is my Instagram, and a lot of people call me that too.

I want to tell you a quick story about how I got connected with Outer Banks, because that's a question I get asked all the time.

So I was working one day. I'm a delivery truck driver for a bread company, so I'm just delivering bread to a Family Dollar. As I'm pushing the bread into the store, a guy stopped me and asked if I was the Bing guy.

I haven't been out to a lot of places, but sometimes people see me working or just out in the wild. He said he thought he should get me connected with the set decorator for a show filming in the area. I told him that'd be great.

Then all of a sudden I get a phone call.

The call from Missy

It was Missy, who's one of my friends now. She had already seen my work, and she was calling because she wanted my work displayed on the last season of Outer Banks.

I was enamored. I was honored just to be viewed that way, and that my art was going to be on a whole TV show, a whole series.

And here's what really got me. I'm from Charleston, and they film here. That's a heartwarming moment for me. A full circle moment.

How the seven paintings made it to the set

We started the process about a month later. They had already picked what they wanted, seven pieces.

Their team would come by while I was at work, and I'd leave the paintings up on the porch for them to pick up. They'd wrap them, put them on the set, hang them, take pictures, and work them into the play of the show. They had them about two or three weeks, then they wrapped them up and delivered them back to me.

It was quite an easy, flowing process.

After that, they gave me this postcard with a picture of all the characters from the last season, and they all had their signatures on it. They sent a handwritten note with it too, thanking me for letting them showcase my art on the show. It was just amazing to receive that. It's something so humbling. To be thought of and appreciated for what you do, you know?

I had no hesitation about any of it. It's such a good opportunity, for me and even for my family. The Bing family gets to be a part of something that's going to be on national television, a syndicated show beloved by many across the world.
